Key Stage 5
KS5 Homework
Homework & independent study is one of the biggest factors in students' success at KS5, and students should be actively seeking to complete extra work and carry out further independent research into their subjects in their own time.
Key points on independent study & homework at KS5
- Students should receive homework from each subject or BTEC unit every week.
- They should look to complete at least 3 hours work per subject/unit, per week outside of lessons.
- Students should be working EVERY night.
- All work should be emailed to their subject teachers via their school email accounts.
- They should never have nothing to do; even if they are up-to-date with all their work, they should still be looking to enhance their knowledge further through revision, reading & research.
REMEMBER- Students are competing against thousands for a place at university or a career, and if they are not prepared to go the extra mile and commit their time and effort, others will and they will lose out!
Support for Students
- The Sixth Form area is open until 8pm most evenings and occasionally even later. Students are welcome to work there, either on the computers or quietly on their own. However, this is very much a place of work and students should not expect to use the space as a social environment after school.
- Subject teachers are always happy to help with any queries, or particular support, but crucially, the onus is on the students to seek out this help; they must develop their skills as independent learners and this includes taking some responsibility for developing their own areas of weakness.
How can parents help?
- DO NOT take them on holiday for the whole of the Christmas & Easter breaks! These holidays fall directly before their exams in January & May and are the most crucial periods for solid & sustained revision.
- Make sure that you see a revision timetable made by the students for these holidays, as students should be organised & systematic in their revision here.
- Ask about their homework for each subject EVERY WEEK!
- Contact one of the sixth form team if you are concerned about a lack of homework, or the progress of your son/daughter.
