YEAR 7 SUBJECT MFL LEARNING OVERVIEW 2011-2012

AUTUMN TERM 1
7th September-21st October

AUTUMN TERM 2
31st October -15th December

Introduction
In the first term, year 7 students will be introduced to the target language culture and language learning in general. They will learn greetings, how to say their name, classroom language, the ABC, phonetics, the numbers 1-15 and how to say their age, birthday and the date.  In this context they will also be introduced to two key verbs in the target language, namely ‘to be’ and ‘to have’Transition/Autobiography
 
In the very first term, students look at autobiography as a genre, reading and analysing the language and literary features of The Diary of Anne Frank as a starting point.

At the end of the unit, students write in the autobiographical style about their transition to secondary school, with a particular focus on creating well-organised, cohesive written pieces

Personal identification
In the second term students will learn new vocabulary and structures in the context of the topic of personal identification. They will be introduced to colours, classroom items, further classroom language, countries and nationalities as well as Christmas traditions, songs and             wishes.

In this context they will also be introduced to adjectival endings

SPRING TERM 1
4th January-10th February

SPRING TERM 2
20th February-30th March

Family
In the spring term students will learn vocabulary related to the topic of family. They will learn how to say how many siblings they have as well as talk about their family and pets, describing their age and relationship. In this context they will be further introduced to possessive adjectives like ‘my’, the negative, and reinforce their understanding and use of the verbs ‘to be’ and ‘to have’

Family and friends
In the second half of the term, year 7 students will further study the topic of family extending to friends. They will learn vocabulary and structures to be able to describe themselves and others in terms of looks as well as characteristics. They will also learn to give opinions and reasons and research Easter traditions in the target countries language and comparing them to ours

SUMMER TERM 1
17th April-1st June

SUMMER TERM 2
11th June-19th July

School
In the summer term students begin with the topic of school. They learn how to say which subjects they study, how to express when they study, what they study and how to give their opinions and to be able to state their likes and dislikes.
Furthermore, they are introduced to ‘time-phrases’ which allows them to sequence sentences and be able to be more descriptive.

A day at school
In the last term students are introduced to a variety of verbs and their usage in the context of describing a day at school. The verbs we concentrate on are ‘er’ verbs. Moreover, we spend time going over key grammatical concepts learnt during the course of the year so that we are prepared for the next academic year.
