FRENCH GCSE LEARNING OVERVIEW 2010-2011

AUTUMN TERM 1

Family and Friends

This unit of work will focus on relationships with family and friends. Students will also learn how to talk about their hobbies and which sports they enjoy playing. As well as developing vocabulary for opinions, this unit will focus on reflexive verbs, and improving student’s confidence in conjugating the present tense.  

The Media

In this unit, students will learn the key vocabulary for the television and the cinema in French, and they will consider the benefits and dangers of the internet. This unit will focus on improving student’s listening and reading skills, and homework will involve completing extended reading tasks.
SPRING TERM 1
5th January-18th February

SPRING TERM 2
28th February-8th April

My Town

Students will learn how to describe where they live in this unit, and will compare their city or town to towns in France. The key grammar focus will be on the comparative, and students will also increasingly be encouraged to use the past and future tenses. During this unit, students will prepare for a controlled speaking assessment on ‘my town’, which will be carried out at the end of the term.
Special Occasions

In this unit students will learn how to talk about special occasions in French. The unit will introduce vocabulary for clothes, and will further develop expressions for opinions, as well as more sophisticated reasons to justify opinions. In this unit, students will focus on a range of grammatical structures, including use of the infinitive, and the imperfect tense for description.
SUMMER TERM 1
25th April-27th May

SUMMER TERM 2
6th June-22nd July

My School

In this unit students will learn how to talk about their school, and will reinforce expressions for comparatives, as they compare English schools with schools in France. Topics will include school rules, describing teachers, and talking about future plans. This unit will focus on the attainment targets for reading and writing.   
Future Plans

In this unit students will learn how to talk about what they are going to do in the future, focusing on jobs and different types of employment. The grammar focus will be on the future and conditional tenses, and students will prepare for a second oral controlled assessment during this unit.
