Unit 1 – Personal Portfolio

Introduction to Lens & Light based Media

In the very first term, students will be introduced to the many elements of photography and its impact on society.
In order to appreciate photography as an art form and as functional images students will further develop their understanding of visual communication.
Students will look at photography as a craft as well as a fine art, and focus on understanding photography within an artistic and historical context.
At the end of this term the students will have a broader knowledge of all the major components that make up photographic images and the impact on society.

Unit 1 – Personal Portfolio

Practical Photography Digital

Students will study a range of skills that are fundamental to all photography such as, composition, exposure, light,focus, shutter speed, perspective and subject matter.
They will learn how to use digital cameras and photo editing technology, with special focus on the formal elements.

Presentation techniques for photography will be explored for sketchbooks and online.

SPRING TERM 1

Practical Photography Digital

Students will continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of digital photography with practical workshops and independent learning.
Complementary contextual studies on the impact of digital photography will underpin understanding and appreciation of the power and future of the digital image.

Practical Photography Film - based

Students will apply their digital photography knowledge to film-based photography.
Students will explore the differences between digital and film-based photography, including how to operate different cameras through to processing and presentation techniques.
Extensive use will be made of the dark room, exploring darkroom techniques and specialised printing techniques.

Practical Photography Film - based

This term students will continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of film based photography through practical workshops and independent learning.
Students will also study the history of photography, through research and connection to photographers and art movements.

Students will have an educational trip to the National Portrait Gallery  - Taylor Wessing portrait exhibition.

Photography Genres

Students will learn about photography genres, such as photojournalism, documentary, street, fashion, landscape and portrait with a view to understanding the different qualities and functions of various genres.
There will be special focus on the further development of technical language and written appreciation and evaluation of work.As well as developing further understanding of vocational and further education opportunities.
