PA Sailing Adventure

Recently, a group of PA students embarked on a sailing adventure facilitated to them by the Outward Bound Trust.

As a crew who had little experience of sailing, PA managed a respectable 4th position by the end of the Tuesday with 16 points. Not bad considering that the winning boat, Easynet, scored 6 points and  was far more experienced, having had several victories in their portfolio.

The five Year 12 PA students did incredibly well after learning their roles for five and a half hours on the Sunday before the regatta.  Gabriel and Ayuub Osman were on winch, John Jaleke on the main sail and Danius floating between. Artenil received the outstanding crew award for his helming of the yacht while in race mode. Everyone commented on how professional Arti was and how it took other competitors a lot longer to achieve what he did – a natural!

Bright and early on Monday morning, the regatta left Port Solent at 8:30 and came off at Cowes at 5pm having completed 3 races, in sunny but windy conditions. The boat was leaning to about 70 degrees with the main sail just missing the water at times.

The evening was spent on land at the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes, and after speeches from team PA and networking with some of the sponsors of the Outward Bound Trust, all were treated to a formal dinner. dB Broadcast Ltd. sponsored the whole event and chartered PA`s yacht.

On Tuesday morning, the team left Cowes at 8:30 but had a delay in starting the first race as there was flat water and no wind whatsoever. The boat committee moved to find some stronger wind and the boats were off again for two races before returning to Port Solent for 4pm.

Having completed the three regatta days, the students learnt a lot more than sailing. They worked totally as a team and looked after each other at all times; they picked up on the camaraderie of the other crews and the camaraderie of the whole fleet when not sailing. All students appreciated the willingness of the sponsors to support the Trust and the impact this has on school age students. A truly amazing experience!
