What will students learn?
KS3 Drama is an exciting opportunity for pupils to work as part of group to explore a range of scripts and styles of theatre, building their knowledge of vocal and physical skills. It asks them to acquire and apply practical theatrical techniques to express themselves and ideas of others and respond to work through description and explanation from the point of view of an actor.
In KS3 students will study
Year 7
Students will learn the origins of theatre from storytelling to Greek theatre and Commedia. Developing basic vocal and physical skills which build into exploration of key text 'Blood Brothers', where rehearsal techniques are used to build characterisation. As the year progresses, pupils explore a second and contrasting play text, 'An Ear for an Eye', as a source of Verbatim theatre, giving real life voices onto the stage, culminating in a group performance.
Year 8
Students take the basic knowledge on vocal and physical skills and develop them in new context working creatively in three different styles: Physical, Naturalistic and Non-Naturalistic to develop their own short pieces of theatre using new and more complex techniques such as Cannon and Unison, Breaking the Fourth Wall and Vocal Intonation.
Year 9
Students have the opportunity to explore job roles and responsibilities in staging a set text 'DNA' by Dennis Kelly, looking at acting and design. They use their collaborative skills, performance skills and rehearsal, performance techniques from year 7 and 8 to interpret the script. They then explore how these skills are similar and different when acting for screen in a joint collaboration with the Media department, before the final topic where they devise their own theatrical creation within different job roles for a live audience.
How will students receive feedback?
At Paddington, all students will receive regular feedback from formative assessment tasks. Within the curriculum, specific tasks are allocated for feedback. This ensures all students gain regular feedback. Teachers will mark student work and provide targeted feedback that enables students to improve their work and make progress. To support student understanding, teachers plan high-quality re-teach time to prepare students for their feedback. Across each term, students will receive feedback from multiple tasks.
