Key Stage 3 History

Subject: History

History is about people and people are complex, fascinating and a whole lot of other things besides. That is why History is probably the most comprehensive and certainly one of the most intriguing subjects there is!

Over the course of KS3 students will study

Year 7

Year 7 is grounded in the medieval period. Students learn about the Norman Conquest of England following the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and developments in Eastern Europe in the 11th century. This is followed with a study on life in Medieval England, including challenges to Medieval Kings and significant events such as the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. Finally, in Cycle 3, students learn about the origins of the renaissance, spread of intellectual ideas and compare scientific and medical developments in the West and East.

Year 8

In year 8, students continue exploring the Renaissance by studying the religious reformations that spread across Europe and England in the 16th Century. This is followed by a study of the British Empire and the impact British colonialism had on the world. As part of this study, students look at the development of the slave trade and the struggle for abolition. In Cycle 3, students look at the development of the industrial revolution in 19th Century Britain.

Year 9

Year 9 ‘zooms in’ on life in the 20th Century. Students start the year by looking at the growing tension in the early 20th century that led to the outbreak of the First World War. This study looks closely at the events of the war and life for soldiers in the trenches. This leads into a study of Nazi Germany during the 1930s. Students learn how Hitler changed life for the German people and led the persecution of the Jews. Students then look at World War Two and the Holocaust.

How will students receive feedback?

At Paddington, all students will receive regular feedback from formative assessment tasks. Within the curriculum, specific tasks are allocated for feedback. This ensures all students gain regular feedback. Teachers will mark student work and provide targeted feedback that enables students to improve their work and make progress. To support student understanding, teachers plan high-quality re-teach time to prepare students for their feedback. Across each term, students will receive feedback from multiple tasks.

What resources can be used to support learning?

  • There are curriculum books for each cycle of learning. These books contain all the knowledge that will be covered in lessons.
  • The 100% books contain the knowledge organisers with core knowledge for each cycle. Students can use this to revise key information through self-quizzing.
  • The United Learning curriculum website has resources and lessons that can be used to support and extend the content covered in lessons.
