What will students learn?
Through practical creation, listening and performing pupils will develop knowledge of interconnecting musical features in a wide range of musical genres. They will have the opportunity to perform in whole class ensembles and smaller groups developing confidence, creativity and appreciation for the storytelling that is music.
In KS3 students will study
Year 7
In year 7, students will be introduced to key knowledge on the musical elements such as: Rhythm, Melody and Riffs, exploring them through Samba, Classical and Rock Music. They will learn key techniques to playing: Piano, Singing, Percussion and Guitar. Developing an ability to listen to and unpick key musical concepts. This year students focus on playing whole class ensembles and developing confidence as a group.
Year 8
In year 8, student develop a sense of everyone being a musician, exploring how music can tell a story and create emotion through development of knowledge on: melody, structure and lyrics. The techniques on range of instruments becomes more complex with students having an opportunity to start to specialise in one instrument, through Jazz, Classical and Blues genres.
Year 9
In year 9, students develop a sense of agency with ensemble band projects enabling them to develop with a specialist instrument in a cover version of a pop song. They develop knowledge on Cadences, Lead Sheets, Layering textures and think about performative elements such as dynamics. Students explore the world of music production and develop a final piece for performance at the end of KS4.
How will students receive feedback?
At Paddington, all students will receive regular feedback from formative assessment tasks. Within the curriculum, specific tasks are allocated for feedback. This ensures all students gain regular feedback. Teachers will mark student work and provide targeted feedback that enables students to improve their work and make progress. To support student understanding, teachers plan high-quality re-teach time to prepare students for their feedback. Across each term, students will receive feedback from multiple tasks.
