What will students learn?
In years 10 and 11, pupils build on knowledge and skills developed at KS3 in a range of fundamental mathematical topics, allowing them to develop and harness their reasoning and problem-solving skills. Understanding of worded proportion problems at year 8 and year 9, for instance, supports students’ ability to solve algebraic proportion in year 10. Success with percentages in year 8 leads to fluency with compound growth and decay in KS4.
At key stage 4, in addition to a core body of content taught to all students, more highly attaining pupils begin to be taught additional mathematical content on the Higher tier; more advanced topics at GCSE, such as estimating gradient and area under a curve, form the basis of some of the content at A level, such as differentiation and integration.
In KS4 students will study
- Graphs and compound measures, further expanding and factorising, algebraic fractions and rearranging formulae.
- Sequences, simultaneous equations, probability and Venn diagrams, percentages and ratio.
- Algebraic proportion, indices and surds, rounding and bounds, averages and data, systematic listing and product rule for counting, and trigonometry.
- Area, volume and angles, bearings and scale, similarity, transformations, circle theorems, solving quadratic equations and quadratic inequalities.
- Further statistics, functions, vectors, 3-D and non-right-angled trigonometry, non-linear simultaneous equations and iteration.
- Gradient and area under a curve, graph transformations, linear inequalities and regions, proof, and constructions and loci.
How will students receive feedback?
At Paddington, all students will receive regular feedback from formative assessment tasks. Within the curriculum, specific tasks are allocated for feedback. This ensures all students gain regular feedback. Teachers will mark student work and provide targeted feedback that enables students to improve their work and make progress. To support student understanding, teachers plan high-quality re-teach time to prepare students for their feedback. Across each term, students will receive feedback from multiple tasks.
What examinations / assessments do students have at the end of KS4?
Exam board: Edexcel
Three exam papers – one non-calculator, and two calculator. Each exam lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.
