Physical Education (Sports Science) GCSE

Subject: Physical Education

Students will learn about a range of sports, their history, and current issues within them. Students are provided the opportunity to fulfil their roles and responsibilities to develop their leadership skills that allow them to communicate what they think, feel, observe, and understand.

What will students learn?

When entering key stage 4, students will be on either the GCSE or BTEC option, which allows them to study the subject in a lot more detail. With more curriculum time here, students are able to have a practical and theoretical understanding towards the subject. Students are allowed to explore their analysis and performance understanding in greater depth, through observational and technological analysis, which highlights not only assessment, but another type of area in the industry they could go into.

All students participate in Core PE at KS4, whether they select PE as an option subject or not. Here they follow each of the following strands: Competition, Leadership and Fitness. During these units of work, they experience a different approach to physical activity that will look to generate interest from students that will enable lifelong engagement in physical activity. Examples of options offered are exercise to music, netball and volleyball. While on the leadership strand, students can achieve the Sports Leaders UK award, where they are able to demonstrate their leadership qualities by running a sporting event/lesson to a group over time.

In KS4 students will study

At GCSE, we look to learn component 1: Fitness and Body Systems first, due to the vast content in this paper. This will also support students with their knowledge and understanding towards component 4, which is the Personal Exercise Programme. On the practical side of the course, students focus on individual sports in year 10, as this is an area that needs more attention towards building skill depth for cohorts. In year 11, the practical side looks more at the team sports they have built on in key stage 3.

What examinations / assessments do students have at the end of KS4?

Exam board: Edexcel

By the end of year 11, students will have been assessed in four components. Components 1 and 2 (60%) are two exams that take place at the end of year 11. Component 3 (30%) is practical performance, where students are assessed in three sports – one team sport, one individual sport and either a team or individual sport. The final element is Component 4, which is a controlled assessment Personal Exercise Programme (10%), where students complete an exercise programme, where they look to make targeted improvements on their performance in an activity.

  • Component 1: Fitness and body systems (1 hour 45 minutes)
  • Component 2: Health and Performance (1 hour 15 minutes)

How will students receive feedback?

At Paddington, all students will receive regular feedback from formative assessment tasks. Within the curriculum, specific tasks are allocated for feedback. This ensures all students gain regular feedback. Teachers will mark student work and provide targeted feedback that enables students to improve their work and make progress. To support student understanding, teachers plan high-quality re-teach time to prepare students for their feedback. Across each term, students will receive feedback from multiple tasks.

What resources can be used to support learning?

  • For GCSE, students have a carefully selected revision guide that covers the content of the course and provides a set of exam questions.
  • Students have a 100% book that contains the knowledge organisers with core knowledge for each component of the GCSE course and each unit of the BTEC course. Students can use this to revise the key information through self-quizzing.
  • Students will have access to a revision resource website called The Everlearner, that the department subscribes to, where students on both the GCSE and BTEC course can use to help with exam preparation and knowledge recall.
