Sport BTEC

Subject: Physical Education

Students will learn about a range of sports, their history, and current issues within them. Students are provided the opportunity to fulfil their roles and responsibilities to develop their leadership skills that allow them to communicate what they think, feel, observe, and understand.

What will students learn?

At key stage 5, students develop highly sought after and transferable skills. Completing a BTEC course allows them to be industry ready, but also provide them with the skills to excel at university. Students develop their independent work skills, that allows them to express both through debating and in writing, where clear decisions and judgements can be made.

On the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport course, students will study four units of work over the two years. This will look at a range of topics that are anatomy and physiology, assessing the needs of an individual where they can make recommendations towards their training programme, and provide nutritional advice. Students will also look to understand what it is like to work in the sports industry, preparing them for career development and planning. The final unit of work it Practical Sports Performance. This takes a further look into sports, helping students to have the key knowledge and skills to deliver both an individual and team sport in the coaching environment with confidence.

In KS5 students will study

Year 12

In year 12, students’ study two units. They focus on Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology, which is an externally assessed unit, that is assessed in the summer of year 12. The other unit they study alongside unit 1 is Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance, which is an internally assessed unit. This allows students to maintain being physically active on the course throughout the year, while understanding why the body systems work the way they do and referring to this in the practical environment.

Year 13

In year 13, students will study the final two mandatory units, which are Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being and Unit 3: Professional development in the Sports Industry. Unit 2 students will be presented with case studies of client details, where they have to unpick the individual’s lifestyle and make recommendations towards their training programme as well as provide nutritional advice. These two units allow students to be industry ready, as they actively engage with assessments that place them in real-life sporting situations that they have to critically analyse and provide actionable feedback for individuals.

How will students receive feedback?

At Paddington, all students will receive regular feedback from formative assessment tasks. Within the curriculum, specific tasks are allocated for feedback. This ensures all students gain regular feedback. Teachers will mark student work and provide targeted feedback that enables students to improve their work and make progress. To support student understanding, teachers plan high-quality re-teach time to prepare students for their feedback. Across each term, students will receive feedback from multiple tasks.
