Sixth Former wins Pupil of the Year Award

The Best in Everyone Awards celebrate the impressive achievements of pupils and staff at United Learning schools across the country. They include awards for academic excellence, extracurricular achievements and for service to school communities. As well as showcasing the talents of the Group’s pupils and staff, they also recognise some of United Learning’s most dedicated, hard-working and inspirational individuals.

Both Ilinca and Era had been nominated by their teachers for the awards. In winning the awards, they saw off strong competition from a field of excellent candidates from across United Learning.

Ilinca was nominated for the way in which she embodies the Paddington Academy values of hard work, integrity and excellence in everything she does. Since joining the academy in September, she has proven herself to be a committed student with extremely high standards both personally and academically. As well as focusing on her own studies, she is regularly seen supporting other students in their work or revision.

Artist Era earnt her nomination by being an incredibly conscientious, resilient and hard-working student. She has worked relentlessly to produce some spectacular art work and has even taken the time to attend History of Art classes at The Courtauld Institute of Art.

Congratulating the students, Peter Jones, Principal of Paddington Academy, said:

“Well done to Era and Ilinca on achieving these awards. Ilinca has thrown herself into our school community and has taken full advantage of all the opportunities available to her both inside and outside the classroom. She is an excellent role model for her peers and a credit to our Sixth Form. She is a very deserving winner of the Pupil of the Year Award and we are excited to see what she achieves in the future!

“Era is an incredibly talented artist who is prepared to take risks and challenge herself. We are very proud of the work she has produced. Her love of art is infectious and it is wonderful to see her constantly exploring new art forms.”

Pupil of the Year Ilinca Dascalescu said: “I moved here last summer from Romania and would have never thought I'd be nominated for an award, never-mind winning such a prestigious award. I can't believe it! I am grateful to my mum and my teachers who have supported me during this transition. Imagine one girl, big dreams, new country, no friends and challenge after challenge. At first, it was overwhelming but my teachers at Paddington Academy did everything in their power to make this as easy as possible. This school is amazing! Moving to Paddington literally changed my life: made me discover my true potential and my real passion. I came here wanting to study dentistry and now I could not be more convinced that is what I will do for the rest of my life!”

Era Kosumi said: “I’ve been studying art for five years now and I never thought that I would win such an award. I only have my art teacher and parents to thank as they have always supported me no matter what. It is an honour winning this award and being recognised for such talent and skill. I couldn’t have asked a better way to end my experience at secondary school.”
