French and Spanish
Our French and Spanish curricula ensure that all students develop fluency and communicate confidently and accurately while fostering an appreciation of different cultures. Through carefully sequenced learning, students build secure knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and phonics, enabling them to understand and produce increasingly complex language in both spoken and written forms. They develop rich vocabulary, manipulate grammatical structures and apply language principles to communicate accurately, adding detail through opinions, reasons and varied tenses. Students also decode, infer and translate meaning effectively, understanding the difference between literal and accurate translation.
The curriculum is deliberately sequenced to broaden and deepen students’ language schemata. It specifies when each item of vocabulary, phoneme and grammatical structure is introduced, revisited and mastered, ensuring long-term retention and increasing fluency. As students progress, they encounter more sophisticated vocabulary, including synonyms, antonyms and shades of meaning, and learn how context influences meaning. This progression prepares them for the increasing linguistic demands of GCSE, particularly in reading, listening and translation.
We recognise that success in French and Spanish depends on developing the five core skills of listening, reading, writing, speaking and translation. Students strengthen receptive skills by recognising patterns, understanding key grammatical features and making accurate inferences, while productive skills enable them to respond confidently, manipulate language and communicate with increasing independence and precision.
Learning a language is fundamental to developing intercultural understanding. Through a wide range of themes and authentic cultural contexts, students appreciate the links between English and the target language while developing a broader understanding of the cultures, traditions and perspectives of French- and Spanish-speaking communities.
