Computer Science

Our computer science curriculum endeavours to ensure students use computational thinking and creativity to understand the digital world. We aim to provide our students with foundational knowledge in computer science so that students know how digital systems work and can put this knowledge to use through programming. We want our students to be digitally literate so that they have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in the future as active participants in the digital world.

Students at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 have opportunities to study aspects of information technology and computer science at sufficient depth to allow them to progress to higher levels of study.

We also have strong extra-curricular offerings in Computer Science, including after-school clubs that focus on programming. Our PSHE curriculum and whole-school assemblies support students to understand how to use technology safely and responsibly, including protecting their online identity and privacy and recognising inappropriate content, contact and conduct.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, students develop essential skills in computer science, digital literacy and safe, responsible use of technology. They are introduced to programming through both block-based and text-based languages (Scratch and Python), giving them the opportunity to understand how software is created and to apply computational thinking to solve problems. Alongside this, students learn how computing impacts their daily lives and the wider world, encouraging them to think critically and creatively about technology. Students’ learning at KS3 is enriched through stop days, which deepen their knowledge and skills.

Key Stage 4

We deliver Edexcel’s GCSE Computer Science specification. We interleave practical (programming) and theory lessons so that students have the opportunity to practise their programming frequently and build their knowledge effectively.
