Music

Our Music curriculum is designed to ensure that every student, regardless of their prior musical experience, develops a confident voice of expression, through creating, performing and responding to a wide range of musical opportunities.

Throughout Key Stage 3, students develop a broad range of practical, theoretical, and creative musical skills. They learn to read standard musical notation, perform on a variety of instruments including keyboard and guitar, sing confidently in both classical and contemporary styles, compose their own music, and make effective use of music technology. Alongside practical performance, students explore music from different genres, cultures, and historical periods, developing their listening, analytical, and appraisal skills.

We are proud that, over the past two years, Music has welcomed the largest GCSE cohort in the school's history. As students progress into Key Stage 4, they build upon these foundations through a more in-depth study of performance, composition, listening, and musical analysis. Every student follows a personalised instrumental or vocal pathway, allowing them to specialise in an instrument of their choice, whether that be voice, violin, piano, guitar, drums, or another instrument. To support their progress, all GCSE Music students receive weekly peripatetic instrumental or vocal lessons, ensuring they have expert tuition throughout the course. Students create increasingly sophisticated compositions, study a wide range of set works and musical styles, and deepen their understanding of harmony, rhythm, structure, instrumentation, and musical context. Regular opportunities for solo and ensemble performance, alongside independent practice and critical evaluation, prepare students exceptionally well for GCSE success and further musical study.

Our curriculum equips students with confidence, creativity, discipline, and resilience while developing a lifelong appreciation of music. Whether students continue their musical journey beyond school or simply leave as informed performers and listeners, they will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage with music for years to come.
