Religious Education GCSE

Subject: Religious Studies


What will students learn? 

At KS4, Religious Studies develops students' learners’ knowledge and understanding of religions and non-religious beliefs. It also develops learners’ knowledge and understanding of religious beliefs, teachings, practices, and sources of wisdom and authority, including through their reading of key religious texts, other texts, and scriptures of the religions they are studying. In addition, it allows students to construct well-argued, well-informed, balanced and structured written arguments. 


In KS4 students will study

Year 10 

Christian denominations - Catholicism, Protestantism, Anglicanism, Quakers, Evangelism, Humanism (atheism)

Issues of relationships - marriage , families, cohabitation, divorce, adultery, sexual relationships, contraception, same-sex relationships, gender equality

Life and death - religious and non-religious beliefs about creation, abortion, euthanasia, the afterlife, funerals

Good and evil - punishments, death penalty, forgiveness, good, evil, suffering

Human rights - Human rights and social justice, prejudice and discrimination, wealth and poverty

Year 11 

Islam - Key beliefs (tawhid, Sunni and Shi’a Islam, prophethood, angels, the afterlife); key practices (5 Pillars, Jihad, Festivals, 10 Obligatory Acts of Shi’a Islam) 

Christianity - Key beliefs (the Trinity, the nature of God, Genesis, Jesus, salvation, afterlife), key practices (worship, sacraments, pilgrimages, festivals, Christianity in Britain today, worldwide church) 


How will students receive feedback?

At Paddington, all students will receive regular feedback from formative assessment tasks. Within the curriculum, specific tasks are allocated for feedback. This ensures all students gain regular feedback. Teachers will mark student work and provide targeted feedback that enables students to improve their work and make progress. To support student understanding, teachers plan high-quality re-teach time to prepare students for their feedback. Across each term, students will receive feedback from multiple tasks.


What examinations / assessments do students have at the end of KS4?

Exam board: Eduqas

Exam: 3 exams. Philosophical and ethical issues – 2 hours; Christianity – 1 hour; Islam – 1 hour
